A Physicist Outside the Ivory Tower (It's not so scary out there)

A degree in physics is good training for many careers beyond those in physics itself, including software engineering.  We'll cover what a career in software engineering is like, how physics can make you a good software engineer, and how you can break into the field.

Bio: Jeff got his B.Sc. in Physics at the University of Manitoba and then a Ph.D. in Applied Plasma Physics at MIT's Plasma Science and Fusion Center, working on the Alcator C-Mod tokamak.  Like nearly all of his fellow students, Jeff left Physics after grad school, first as a software engineer, building tools for the scientists at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego.  From there he moved to industry, developing applications for a series of startups.  After leading Engineering and Operations for the AVOKE team at BBN Technologies (now RTX), Jeff joined a colleague from a previous startup to form a new one: Spendata LLC, an industry-leading spend analytics company.  Outside of software, Jeff enjoys giving talks on science and math, hiking, traveling, and catering to his poodle's every whim.
