Biography:
Aria Evans (they/she/he) is an award winning, queer, interdisciplinary artist who works in dance, theatre and film. Holding a BFA hons. in dance from York University, Aria is also a certified Intimacy Coordinator through the Intimacy Professionals Association. Collaboration is the departure point for the choreographic work that they create with their dance theatre company POLITICAL MOVEMENT. Aria was the Urjo Kareda award recipient at Tarragon Theatre from 2023-2024, the Metcalf Artistic Director Intern at Soulpepper Theatre from 2021-2022 and co-Artistic Director of hub14 from 2013-2018.
Aria has done movement direction for Native Earth Performing Arts, Tarragon Theatre, Soulpepper Theatre, the Stratford Festival, FabCollab, Theatre Passe Muraille, Urban Ink, Manidoons Collective, Jumblies Theatre, Thinking Rock Community Arts, Humber College among others. Aria has worked as an Intimacy Coordinator for Spindle Films Inc., OUTtv, Black Entertainment Television, Your Cool Aunt Productions // Peach Emoji Productions and Guetcha Guaritcha. As an Intimacy Director Aria has worked with Coal Mine Theatre, Factory Theatre, the Toronto Metropolitan University, the Stratford Festival and Soulpepper Theatre. Aria has taught dance film for Guelph Dance, the Toronto District School Board, the University of Toronto, Toronto Metropolitan University, the School of Toronto Dance Theatre and for the SummerWorks Performance Festival.
As a performer and choreographer, Aria has presented their work with the Museum of Contemporary Art, the National Arts Centre, Soulpepper Theatre and the City of Toronto, Public Energy, Citadel + Compagnie, DanceWorks, The Toronto Concert Orchestra, Ontario Culture Days, the Toronto Fringe, SummerWorks, Long Winter and many more. Aria has toured with Theatre New Brunswick and Prairie Theatre Exchange as well as Kaha:wi Dance Theatre and performed for many of the country's leading dance artists and organizations.
Aria was an Invited Guest Contributor to the 20th anniversary Canadian Arts Summit, they have talked on interdisciplinary panels and podcasts for the Dance: Made In Canada Festival, the Dance Current, the Playwrights Guild of Canada, the Dancer Transition Resource Centre, Theatre Passe Muraille, the Indigenous Curatorial Collective, Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Mixed in the Six, CPAMO, CAHOOTS, the Toronto Dance Community Love-In, Fall For Dance North, the Canadian Alliance of Dance Artists, Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts, DarkNights, On The Move and many more. Aria has also acted as a guest curator on behalf of many arts organizations.
