Scholarship & Bursaries

In the span of just over a decade and two campaigns later, University retirees have raised close to $220,000 for the UWRA Scholarship Fund to support the Scholarship and two Bursaries that carry the name of our Association. One pretty huge accomplishment! These awards commemorate the countless years of excellent and dedicated service provided by all retirees of The University of Winnipeg.

Established in March 2010, the UWRA Scholarship supports students of exceptional academic performance. One year later we created a Bursary fund to ease the burden of high performance but financially stressed students. Both awards recognize continuing students of proven academic ability, and both require records of sustained community service.

The Scholarship was originally worth $1,000. In 2016 its value was increased to $2,000; and in 2017, it was increased to $3,000. In 2019, the Scholarship award was increased from $3,000 to $4,500.

Our first Bursary award for $500 was made in 2012. In February 2014, we created two bursaries each in the amount of $500. And, in 2017, both awards were raised to $1,000 each. In 2019, the two Bursary awards were increased from $1,000 to approx. $1,400 each.

GREAT NEWS – in order to reduce the pandemic's effect on post-secondary students, the Provice of Manitoba provided additional money for the University to distribute. This additional funding allowed the UWRA awards to be fully matched from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative (MSBI). Thus, in 2021 we were able to provide one additional $3,000 Scholarship and two additional $1,000 Bursaries!

The recipients of the Scholarship awards since 2010/11 are as follows:

2020/21 ... Nikolas Furletti (Biochemistry) and Name Withheld By Request (BA/BEd)

2019/20 ... Julia Antonyshyn (Environmental Studies)

2017/18 … Jillian Sunderland (Sociology)

This record of supporting academically strong, community-committed undergraduates has been made possible by the private generosity of our Association members and of other University retirees, by public funds coming from the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative, and by the administration of those funds through the University of Winnipeg Foundation. To every contributor, we say “Thank You!”

In the Fall of 2016, the UW Foundation recognized this contribution with a plaque that is now on display in the University Club.
