The Global College calls to raise awareness about Workers' Rights and Western Consumerism
On November 24, 2012, a fire at the Tazreen garment factory in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killed 112 garment factory workers. The Tazreen garment factory and other factories in the region continue to manufacture cheap clothes for global outlets like Walmart, and Sears as well as designer brands like H&M, Tommy Hilfiger and GAP among others. The factory fire sparked a debate about exploitative working conditions, workers' rights and global accountability.
"Unpardonable Negligence: Seven Years after the Tazreen Factory Fire" lecture, we will discuss the impact of Tazreen Factory fire on worker's rights and international efforts towards protecting them in an era of globalized production chains. Through a series of photographs of the Tazreen factory fire, and interviews of garment factory workers, this lecture will evaluate the progress made and the tough road ahead in the global worker's rights movement.
The lecture is presented by Kundan Mishra is a Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) at the University of Massachusetts Boston (USA) in the Global Governance and Human Security program.
