Location: 1MS25, Global College

Peter IvesSpeaker: Dr. Peter Ives, Professor, Political Science Department, University of Winnipeg

Drawing on his recent book, Rethinking Free Speech (Fernwood 2024), this talk will discuss the dominant reasons often given for why free speech is important. Ives will argue that the rationales of common goals of free speech, including the search for truth and knowledge, the requirements of democracy and the human need for self-expression, actually involve quite distinct and often incompatible conceptions of what free speech entails. Because contemporary debates concerning free speech and social media, including its regulation, begin from such a confused understanding, people cannot mobilize for the type of public sphere that they yearn for.

A pizza lunch will be provided. Please RSVP to global.college@uwinnipeg.ca by March 3, 2025.
