Upcoming Event- Voices of Teesta Film Screening
Mon. Mar. 18, 2024
Date: Wednesday, March 27
Time: 5:30 pm- 7:00 pm
Venue: 1M28, Manitoba Hall, University of Winnipeg
Join us for a film screening and interactive storytelling session with Minket Lepcha, an Indigenous filmmaker and storyteller from Darjeeling, who will share her lived experience of her relationship with River Teesta and the recent disaster. Minket Lepcha is currently pursuing her PhD in Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba.
The flash flood of River Teesta in October 2023 was a force of nature that uprooted the lives and beliefs of many people living alongside the river.
The swelling waters from the Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) from South Lhonak Lake swept away the 1,200-megawatt hydropower dam in Chungthang, North Sikkim, India, taking with it many lives and properties downstream.
