Robert Thomas Byrnes

It is with great sadness that we inform our students of the passing of Professor Robert Byrnes on September 18, 2020 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Dr. Byrnes joined the Department of Rhetoric, Writing, and Communications in 1990. He was a popular and beloved teacher. Students who took his classes will remember with fondness his charismatic teaching style, his love of eloquent speech and writing, and his passion for debate.

Professor Jaqueline McLeod Rogers, Chair of the Department, says, “Amongst many of his colleagues at UW, Bob was renowned for his big personality and boisterous laugh; amongst those who worked alongside him in the department for years, he was known for being caring, generous, and devoted to his students and their learning.”

He will be greatly missed.
