Our Commitment to the Community
Opened in September 2014, the $40 million Axworthy Health & RecPlex features a 55,000 sq. ft. artificial turf, 4-lane regulation rubberized sprint track and jump pit, community gym and multi-purpose room - specially designed for drumming circles and smudging ceremonies. It is a teaching, training, recreational, and multi-purpose facility for students, faculty, staff, and the community.
Funded in part by the province and the City of Winnipeg, the RecPlex is open to inner-city neighbourhood residents and community organizations one third of the time. The facility helps to alleviate the shortage of sport and recreational space in the downtown area where it is otherwise unavailable or unaffordable.
In partnership with the Spence Neighbourhood Association, the University of Winnipeg provides the facility spaces at no cost to community groups and area residents. For more information on the University of Winnipeg's commitment to the wider community, please see the Community Charter.
Community Partners
The RecPlex has played a vital role in the community since opening in 2014. The facility quickly developed a reputation of being a reliable, inclusive and welcoming space that serves a diverse demographic. Throughout the years we've seen significant growth in the amount of community users who access the facility and this would not be possible without the help of our community partners. Their contribution to building personal connections and providing engaging programming is invaluable. By collaborating together, we succeed in continuing to reach our common goal; providing high quality sport and recreation programming in a space that is accessible to everyone.
