City Borders: Exploring the History of Sanctuary in North America.
This lecture explores the history of sanctuary across two centuries with a particular focus on questions of protection, community and responsibility in urban contexts. Given contemporary debates about asylum and refuge, this lecture teases out the shifts from covert to public forms of sanctuary to elaborate what is at stake in any discussion of refuge and hospitality in the present.
Dr. laura Madokoro is a historian and Associate Professor in the Department of History at Carleton university. Algonquin Territory. Her research frocuses on histories of migration, settler colonialism and humanitariaism.
